Subject:Things you should not do while weight training.
Time:05:14 pm
Well, I'm still going full tilt on the bike, and I'm up to 85 pounds on the stomach crunches. I'm slowly adding weight to all of my reps. There's been no real pain thus far, as I've been creeping along slowly.
Well, there has been some pain. My right heel. Apparently, I 'push off' with this heel on the bike. I've had sharp pains in that heel, but according to my Triffid honey, that is normal. The muscles are apparently doing things to the bone in order to have a better anchor. Advice: When experiencing this kind of muscle pain, do not, I repeat, DO NOT rub it. It felt good while I was doing it, but when I tried walking on it...Ow, ow, ow! It still hurts today.

Of the good, I'm not getting knee pains anymore. I can squat down and stay there, sit indian-style, and only have to stretch occasionally.

Okay, I may have found my new career. How did I miss this one? Sewing with DNA.

Subject:Happy birthday to me!
Time:11:52 am
Okay, it's not my real birthday. It's my SLAC birthday (it's been a year already? Wow!) To celebrate I'm cooking lamb chop things tonight.

Lena did an evil, evil (though extremely cool) thing. She found a website that sells really cute plushie particles. I'm finding it really hard to resist. I might just end up with nearly three dozen particles on my bed! Incidentally, not only do the neutrinos have cool ninja masks (they pass through matter without a sound, just like a ninja) but the pack contains no anti-neutrinos, presumably because there's no conclusive proof that they aren't their own antiparticle. How cool is that? I think I'm in love.

Subject:BRILLIANT!
Time:08:28 am
We got in last night to San Diego and decided to take a little nap.  14 hours later, I wake up, panick, and decide to scan some comics.

I left the scanner cable at home.  Now I have to wait for a Best Buy or Office Depot to open.

Oh, and my laptop slipped from my hands and there's a crack in th case - and it WAS running a little slow.  And I lost my debit card.

Everything's turning up Milhouse.

I like to think I'm getting all of the bad luck out of the way early.

Time:10:12 am
I woke up at half six this morning with the most excruciating cramp in my calf muscle. For a second, I was convinced that my left leg was attempting to break my left leg. It still hurts now - I think the contraction was severe enough to actually damage the muscle. Plus, when I got out of bed this morning, it completely buckled under the weight. Not the best thing for my ego.

According to Wikipedia, cramps are caused by one of six things, and none of them fit. Possibly low temperature - I woke up on top of the covers - but I don't really think even that would be extreme enough to causing cramping. Also, says the Wiki entry, cramp is sometimes referred to as a 'charley horse', which has an interesting (if speculative) etymology, though sadly not one that will stop me hobbling around the office today.

Things for you to do today: 1) read this (me) . 2) watch this (Colbert). 3) leave comments (below)

I'd like to see more damage assessments for hurricanes hitting New York and flooding Manhattan -- something like the 1938 Long Island Express, but aimed a bit more to the west. It's just a matter of time.

Subject:ANddd the boss-man just gave up caffeine...again.
Time:05:16 pm
About one or twice a year, my boss 'gives up' caffeine. He drinks regular Dr. Pepper, so this means he's cutting back on sugar and caffeine. Whenever he does this...he goes nuts. Currently, I've been told I don't charge enough/charge too much/can't charge for that. When I had to take his truck to run some errands, the gas tank light was on, and the needle was pointing at the 'E'. Yes, I put in $6 in gas, just enough to make sure I didn't run into any problems while I was in the middle of downtown. I got yelled at, about how the truck 'wasn't really empty, it was just low'. Yeah, I'd rather have a bit more gas than run out and have to walk two miles with a gas can for the same amount of gas. And he's going to have to get gas before he drives home. *sigh*

I want the hell out of here. Right after this show, I'm launching into a new job search, hard-core.

Subject:I iz goin crazee on da interwebs
Time:07:52 pm
Current Mood:[mood icon] restless
I don't usually do recs but I've been nursing my rather extreme PMT by reading novel-like fics (something else I don't usually do).
I have to say that the new [info]black_cigarette House/Wilson fic Distress Call is, as was probably predictable, amazing. I'm not really one for AU's either (i'm having a big week) and this is about as AU as it comes but it is totally fantastic. Intriguing and funny and somehow very very in character.

I also, *hangs head in shame* ended up on the dark side, checking out some Lupin/Snape sites. I don't think I've ever read any Lupin/Snape before but I picked something at random and gave it a go. The High Cost of Living is brilliant. I think I like it especially because it has very strong references to Remus/Sirius but it's set post-OotP. It was written after HBP but before DH so it's AU but fantastic. Some of the authors predictions were spot on and it's a lovely look at how Remus could have been happy.

Their both WIP as well, something I NEVER read! I really am going crazee on the interwebs this week.<-- have been on LOLcats far far too much this week also.

Watched both series of Torchwood in a week and a half. Not overly impressed I must admit. I loved Gwen and Ianto was funny. I still want to smack Jack most of the time. Some of the boylovin' was fun. Meh. I'm a who-girl through and through but the spin-offs don't really grab me.

Had insane fun with my icons (thank you [info]theyellow_daisy again for that by the way) uploading new stuff and chucking old boring stuff. A few Who-quotes and Studio 60 icons. Oh the joy!

And yes, I will be off to the temp agencies next week because I need a job and all of this is just an artful form of denial.

My fics are going... slowly. The PTSD R/S fic has hit the 13000 mark which scares the fuck out of me. And the colour just won't... argh, I'm so close, I can feel it's nearly done but still there's something missing. Hmmm. And since Rose made her comeback I've been getting loads of reviews on old work, yay! Right. Back to my idle interwebbing.

Subject:Truest Beowulf Translation?
Time:12:13 pm
So, if you're not reading Heaney, whom would you suggest as a translator of Beowulf for someone who is learning Anglo Saxon and would like an 'as true to the original' version? Regrettably, I have neither the skill nor the time to try and translate for myself :/

Suggestions? Comments? Epiphanies? I have already checked the memories.

Subject:Mountaineering terminology
Time:07:00 pm
I'd like to clarify the question in my last post, namely "what is mountaineering?". Let's start by introducing some standard terminology so we've got something to work with. Fun things to do in the mountains ) Clearly, a given mountaineering trip may involve some or all of these, and in addition may involve skiing, snowshoeing or abseiling (rappelling). But how many of the ingredients need to be present for a given trip to count as mountaineering? Let's consider some scenarios:
  1. An ascent of a classic face in the Alps or Greater Ranges. Multi-day, involving technical rock and mixed climbing, gaining a major summit at the end.
  2. An ascent of an Alpine 4000m peak by its easiest route.
  3. An ascent of a lesser Alpine peak by its easiest route.
  4. A multi-day "big wall" climb in Yosemite.
  5. A single-day, multi-pitch rock climb on a roadside crag or sea stack.
  6. A single-day, multi-pitch rock climb on a mountainside.
  7. A single-pitch climb on a crag.
  8. A single-pitch crag on a mountainside.
  9. A boulder problem on a mountainside.
  10. A sustained scramble up a Scottish hillside in summer.
  11. A walk up a hill of 1000m or so in summer.
  12. A walk up a hill of 600m or so in summer.
  13. A sustained scramble up a Scottish hillside in winter.
  14. A walk up a hill of 1000m or so in winter.
  15. A walk up a hill of 600m or so in winter.
I think I'd count 1, 2, 6, and 13 as mountaineering, and possibly 3, 4, 10 and 14. How about the rest of you? I've never done any walking or climbing in the Alps (though I have skied there), so I'm unclear on the level of difficulty involved: my vague understanding is that the high Alpine peaks require little technical ice- or rock-climbing by their easiest routes, but involve plenty of movement over snow and ice, and may involve some scrambling on icy rock and movement over glaciers. They also have much greater objective dangers (avalanche and rockfall) than are encountered in the UK. Perhaps the experts can give us the benefit of their experience :-)

Subject:oh look, a can of worms! i wonder what's inside...
Time:01:42 pm
Reading a couple of syndicated sets of technical blogs today, I came across this entry (second sub-heading, with the picture). As you can see from the comments to the post itself, there's plenty of opinions on it, and this being the Internet there's enough immaturity and downright stupidity to go around too. My question is: do you think that's offensive? Why / why not? Slightly more importantly, how would you go about telling the guy "Dude, that's not cool"[1]? (Some people's efforts have not been so successful).

Ah, the joy of the Free Software community. Compare this storm in a teacup to where one operating system's Benevolent Dictator for Life called the developers of another operating system a "bunch of masturbating monkeys", and they're apparently having a laugh about it.

[1] - For the record, that's my position. Over and above the thorny question of why it should not be posted on the Interwebs in the first place, it definitely should not be posted somewhere that's picked up by a news feed of blog posts about a Linux distribution!

Subject:Mountain CV
Time:01:03 am
I'm going to Skye at the weekend, to spend some time with my parents and to do a section of the Cuillin with a couple of friends. We're going to try and link a couple of the cruxes (the Inaccessible Pinnacle and the TD Gap) in a day - the full traverse is apparently better attempted as a two-day trip. My Dad offered to hire us a guide, which struck us as both generous and sensible. Said guide asked us to fill in a form detailing our levels of mountain experience, and I thought I'd share:

If you're still alive at the end, it was mountain experience )

It was quite a fun exercise, writing it all out like that, and (like all such exercises) it's helped me to see both how much I've done and how much further there is to go. I've been consciously trying to push my grade a bit this summer, hence the A'Chir traverse and Curved Ridge, both quite challenging scrambles. I really enjoyed the winter climb I did back in February (a colleague took Michael and I up Ledge Route on Ben Nevis - great conditions, and lots of fun), and would like to be more au fait with technical terrain, ropework and general mountaineering skillz so I can get the most out of the coming winter climbing season. Sadly, the thesis (or rather, my inability to get anywhere with the thesis) keeps getting in the way.

By the way, I have a question of terminology: what counts as "mountaineering" to you? Any activity in the hills? Climbing hills whose summits are greater than a certain height above sea level? Anything involving a rope? Anything involving crampons? The intersection of the above? I veer towards the "intersection of the above" definition myself, and hence don't count what I do as mountaineering: it's either hillwalking, or it's rock-climbing. Stuff like Curved Ridge (where we were roped together, and mostly climbing with hands and feet) might count, I suppose. And what about the title "mountaineer"? I certainly wouldn't describe myself as a mountaineer - at best, I'm a hillwalker with ambitions to better myself. Maybe when I've done a guideless Alpine four-thousander or two.

My Munro-count has gone up by one this weekend, after a trip to Beinn Fhionnlaidh and Sgor na h'Ulaidh on Sunday )

You can see our route here: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2100666 . Total distance a bit over 22km, in just under 10 hours.

Returning briefly to the subject of the dreaded thesis, I added an index this evening, and managed to add four pages with a couple of hours' work (bringing me up to 108 pages). I think it's a worthwhile activity: it's given me another pass over the whole thing, so I have a better handle on what's there; it'll be easier to find definitions when I'm looking at a printout; it should help the examiners; it'll help me to identify gaps; and it'll make it easier for me to demonstrate to my supervisor that yes, I do deal with that issue :-)

1 A col (also called a saddle, bealach or pass) is the lowest point on the ridge between two mountains, or, from the valley-dweller's point of view, the highest point you need to travel over to get from one valley to another.
